ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Worked with Broward County to provide the first community bus for residents of the City of Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Instrumental in bringing Florida Memorial University into the City of Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Co-chair for United Negro College Fund.  Over 13 years, raised over $120,000.
  • Assisted in securing funding for the African American Research Library & Cultural Center through various community partners.
  • Leadership in identifying CRA as an economic and redevelopment tool for 441/State Rd 7 in the City of Lauderdale Lakes, a model which is being adopted by other cities along SR 7/441.
  • One of three founding members of the State Road 7 Collaborative that secured over $2 million to begin the renaissance/branding of State Road 7 as an economic hub and transportation friendly corridor.
  • One of three founding members of Unifest, the oldest Caribbean multi-cultural festival in Broward County, celebrating the diversity of Broward.
  • Spearheaded a signage identification program for every neighborhood in the City of Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Instrumental in getting a street in the City of Lauderdale Lakes re-named for Charles McLymont, for his activism in the struggle to desegregate Ft. Lauderdale beaches.
  • Active member of Land Preservation and Parks Advisory Boards for over 7 years, which provided funding of new parks and a community swimming pool for the City of Lauderdale Lakes  and other areas in Central Broward.
  • Pushed for the Regional Park in Central Broward, now being constructed in the City of Lauderhill.
  • Sponsored legislation to establish the Economic Development, School Advisory and Historic Preservation Boards in the City of Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Developed the “Mayor and Commissioners for a Day” program in association with the Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes/West Sunrise, which engages the Kiwanis Club  student members and other after school program participants in Lauderhill, Sunrise and  Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Coordinated the cultural exchange program under the auspices of the Caribbean Chamber with the visiting marching band out of Jamaica and local marching bands in our community.
  • Founding member of the Lauderdale Lakes Community Council.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

  • Elected Commissioner 1996 reelected 1999, 2002 and unopposed 2006.
  • Past President of the Broward County League of Cities (2004) (a first for a Commissioner in the City of Lauderdale Lakes); highlighting the crisis and challenges of affordable homeownership.
  • Active member of Florida League of Cities and the National League of Cities Participated in numerous National/Florida League of Cities’ classes to develop elected officials.
  • Member - State of Florida Consumer Council, representing Broward County. 
  • Vice Chair - Broward County Charter Review Commission 2006-08.
  • Member - Broward County Management and Efficiency Study Commission 2005-06
  • Foundation Member - Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes-West Sunrise
  • Vice Chair - United Negro College Fund/Broward County, FL
  • Chair, World Netball Games, the first ever held in the United States.
  • Member - National Conference for Community & Justice (NCCJ)
  • Member/Board of Directors - Florida Medical Center, Lauderdale Lakes  
  • Charter member of the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce
  • Founder, Caribbean American Democratic Club of Broward County
  • Created opportunity for the Lauderhill/Lauderdale Lakes Central YMCA.
  • Instrumental in the planning and creation of the East Sunrise Residence Association.
  • Instrumental in the planning and creation of the Lauderhill Central Homeowners Association a working model adopted from Lauderdale Lakes.
  • Encouraged and supported the creation of Lauderdale Lakes North Gate Homeowners Association, Westgate Home Owners Association and Oakland Estate Homeowners Association.
